WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnotherapy is a highly effective way to bring about desired change in ourselves. It makes use of the natural deeply relaxed state we call ‘trance’ to access the many resources of the unconscious mind. Being ‘in trance’ is in fact a very familiar feeling. We go in and out of trance every day – when daydreaming, for instance, or, when travelling on a train, finding you have reached your destination without remembering large parts of the journey.
Hypnotherapy has nothing to do with Stage Hypnotism, which is a form of entertainment. So Hypnotherapy is not brainwashing and does not mean giving up control of your mind. Being successfully hypnotised is not a sign of being weak-willed. You remain aware and in control throughout. In fact, Hypnotherapy is a way to achieve more control.
The trance state is very like the dreaming state: moving beyond the limits of our conscious and rational mind. It is the realm of feelings and of the imagination, expressing itself in images, symbols and metaphors. We can use this powerful state to engage with, resolve and heal difficult issues in our lives.
While we are in a trance state, we can access repressed memories and feelings or events which our minds may have locked away beyond the reach of our conscious memory. Our unconscious mind does this to protect us from being distressed by them – it is one of the unconscious mind’s very effective strategies to try and keep us safe and functioning in our lives today.
